More About Duke

Duke’s early life was full of hardship, but his spirit has always shone through. In March 2025, he was found on a beach in Barbados curled up beside his mother, Stevie. Both were thin, covered in fleas and ticks, and battling tick fever. Duke, the younger and more fragile of the two, was especially unwell. A kind tourist who found them quickly sought our help and brought them to the vet, where Ocean Acres stepped in to take over their care.

While Stevie was discharged first, Duke needed a little more time to recover. He fought hard, and when he finally returned to Ocean Acres, the reunion with his mother was pure joy, her tail wagging, his wiggling with excitement, both of them relieved to be together again.

For a long time, we believed Stevie and Duke would need to be adopted as a pair, as their bond was so strong. But with time, confidence, and stability, both dogs have blossomed into happy, well-adjusted individuals. They now do beautifully together or apart. Duke is ready for a family of his very own—though of course, he could still be adopted with Stevie if someone is looking for a wonderful mother–son duo.

Duke is a happy, lively, affectionate young boy with a big heart and a playful nature.
Here’s what makes him special:
•   Medium energy – enjoys playtime but also loves a good cuddle
•   Very affectionate and thrives on human contact
•   A talented jumper! He has been known to hop out of his pen, so he must live in a home with a secure fence and should not be left outside unattended, just in case he decides to show off his athletic skills
•   Great with other dogs, cats, and the young volunteers he has met at Ocean Acres
•   Could be an only dog or join a multi-pet family
•   Walks nicely on a leash and is eager to learn and explore

Duke has come such a long way since the day he was rescued. He is strong, joyful, and ready for the next chapter of his life—a home where he can play, bond with his humans, and finally settle into the comfort he deserves.

Duke is approximately 30lbs
