Thank you for your interest in adopting an Ocean Acres rescue cat or kitten. Here’s the answers to frequently asked questions. If we’ve not covered a query you may have, please contact us for more information.
Are all the cats and kittens for adoption displayed on your website?
We have cats and kittens that urgently need homes, some sheltered at the sanctuary or others in different locations – they might not be featured on the website yet. If you can’t find a cat or kitten that suits you, please contact us and we’ll tell you about the ones which might not be advertised yet.
How do I adopt a cat or kitten?
Browse our website or social media to select a kitten or cat you’re interested in adopting and contact us for an adoption interview. Should you meet the criteria, we’ll arrange a home-check to ensure you and your property are suitable.
What are your adoption guidelines?
That all cats are adopted into a safe and loving environment where they’ll be cared for to the highest standards: fed, watered, kept healthy through regular worm, tick and flea treatments and taken to the vet if they get sick – and most importantly that they are truly loved and given lots of attention (of course at their discretion). It is not unheard of but but we’d like to make it clear that cats or kittens are not to be tied or penned. You can adopt a cat or kitten as an indoor and/or outdoor pet but you cannot live on or near a busy main road or where they will be in any immediate danger. If your cat will be a roaming outdoor cat, on adoption they must be securely contained in your house for a minimum of four weeks – this is so when they’re let loose they’ll be familiar with their surroundings and will find their way home. With thousands of stray and unwanted cats in Barbados we have a strict no breeding policy and we ensure that all Ocean Acres cats are neutered or spayed before they leave the sanctuary, if you’re adopting a kitten, you agree to having them sterilized when they become of age. To adopt a cat/kitten, you’ll be required to sign a contract agreeing to our terms and conditions.
How much is the adoption fee?
There is a minimum donation of us$50. This is to help us continue caring for other dogs and cats in need.
I have another cat/cats – will they get along?
Cats may get along instantly or it could take weeks or months to create a bond. Some may become close friends or never do and in this instance, generally they learn to happily coexist by avoiding each other.
I have a dog/dogs – will they get along?
If your dog is clearly cat aggressive we do not advise you to adopt a cat. If we feel your dog could be trained into accepting a new cat friend, we can arrange for a professional dog trainer to introduce them.
Follow-Ups
By adopting a cat, you agree to keep us updated with their progress and allow us to visit them from time-to-time. This is to ensure you and your cat are happy. Ocean Acres reserves the right to reclaim the cat if we believe they are not being kept to care standards they require.
What if I can’t afford to look after my cat anymore?
If your cat gets sick or you can’t afford to maintain them, please contact us immediately. You’re not to leave them to suffer. We’ll discuss possible solutions in helping you financially.
What if I don’t want or can’t keep the cat anymore?
You are to contact us immediately and we will collect them. Under no circumstances are you to abandon the cat or give them to anyone else without prior notification and agreement with Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary.
